CURRENT NEWS:
Mighty M Band Wins Region 16 - Class 3A Outstanding Performance Series Competition!
The Mighty M Band placed first in the “March” category of the Association of Texas Small School
Bands (ATSSB) Outstanding Performance Series (OPS) at the ATSSB OPS Region16 Competition held June 2nd.
They also finished second place in the “Concert Selection” category of the OPS as well.
Each year, band directors submit their CD’s from their UIL Concert Contest Performance in a “blind” competition
where the judges are not told which band is to perform or who the director is.
The Mighty M Band was recognized for its performance of Brad Walker’s composition entitled,
“Da Me La Bibbia” which means “Give Me The Bible”. Mr. Walker used several hymns (in the public domain)
to compose his march for concert band. The MHS Band finished ahead of state “power-house” bands such as
Lubbock Cooper in class 3A. The band also was recognized for its performance of “Kaddish” written by Dr. Francis McBeth.
“Kaddish” finished in second place behind Lubbock Cooper but ahead of Lubbock Cooper’s other concert selection.
Mr. Walker was elated at this prestigious honor. “We are now representing all 3A bands in region 16 with these two pieces of music.
I want to thank all of our high school band students and their hard work which has made this possible.”
The recordings will now be forwarded to the area level for further judging and possible advancement to the state
competition later this month.
Due to the complex nature of the AREA round of judging, region 16 has been placed
with a group of three regions that are located just south of San Antonio that extend from Fredericksburg to Pflugerville.
These bands will be judged by the ATSSB EAST AREA in Longview for selection to the STATE round sometime before the 26th of June. Here is a list of the bands
that have been selected to represent their respective ATSSB Regions:

Region 12 – Marion
Region 12 – LaVernia
Region 13 – Needville

15 Mighty M Band Members Compete at Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest
15 members of the Mighty M Band traveled to Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas to participate in the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competition held the 30th of May. This was the final performance for graduating seniors: Eddie Alvarado, Chris Ambriz, Lorenzo Nunez, Veronica Nunez, Janice Pacheco, and Erika Perez. This competition is judged at the highest levels of high school musical adjudication. There is no room for error. A division “three” at this contest equates to a division “one” at the regional competition.
Elizabeth Symm received a superior rating (division one) on her flute solo and received a gold medal for her efforts. The brass quintet narrowly missed earning a division one and had to settle for a division two award. The clarinet choir also received a division two and the saxophone quartet received division three rating.
Members of the brass quintet were: Jonathan Lennon – Sophomore Trumpet, Eddie Alvarado – Senior Trumpet, Lissi Hall – Junior French Horn, Chris Ambriz – Senior Trombone, and Franklin Piland – Sophomore Tuba. The Clarinet Choir consisted of: Courtney Mardis – Sophomore Clarinet, Sara Cisneros – Sophomore Clarinet, Erika Perez – Senior Clarinet, Janice Pacheco – Senior Alto Clarinet, and Veronica Nunez – Senior Bass Clarinet. The Saxophone Quartet was comprised with: Harley Davidson – Sophomore Alto Saxophone, Ismael Mendoza – Sophomore Alto Saxophone, Angel Daniel – Sophomore Tenor Saxophone, and Lorenzo Nunez – Senior Baritone Saxophone.
Head Band Director Brad Walker noted, “I’m very proud of these fine young musicians and the effort they have put forth all year long. I will miss the graduating seniors and wish them every success in the future. I’d also like to publicly thank Marcos Gomez for his untiring efforts in teaching our woodwind players and taking them to a new level of musicianship.”
Assistant Director Marcos Gomez added that he was very happy with the results and is looking forward to greater accomplishments from the returning bandsmen next year.
