Notes and asides from the Principal:
“My Teacher, My Hero”
The greatest man in
my life, other than my father, was my Algebra I teacher and basketball coach,
Kenneth Cleveland. Coach was killed by
lightning in 1994 in a tragic accident.
This tragedy has brought much grief and sorrow to many of my friends
over the years, but it has also brought many positive feelings and stories into
the light. Last summer, a dedication of
the new gymnasium in Dimmitt brought a story that I thought you might find
interesting and inspirational.
Coach was very
successful. He died at the age of 53 and
had already won 800+ games and was 8th in the Nation in wins. His teams won three state championships and
made the State Tournament 10 times in his 32 years in Dimmitt. The story that I find the most interesting
just may be the story of the State Championship game in 1979, which Dimmitt
lost by one point. A good friend of mine
was called for a foul with 1 second remaining in the game. The other team’s player made both free throws
which gave that team a 1 point lead and virtually guaranteed the loss for
Dimmitt. Immediately after the game,
the coach with multiple honors, awards, and esteem from the entire State went
straight to the young man who committed the foul that “lost” the game. He said the words that all of us want to hear
from our hero, our mentor, our idol; “I love you” and hugged him tightly.
